Bird Of the Week – Teal Duck
Basic Facts
- Size: About 14–15 inches long
- Weight: Around 10–14 ounces
- Type: Dabbling duck (feeds at the water’s surface rather than diving)
- Habitat: Marshes, ponds, wetlands, and shallow lakes
- Diet: Seeds, aquatic plants, insects, and small invertebrates
How to Identify a Teal
Male (drake):
- Chestnut-brown head
- Bright green stripe behind the eye
- Gray body with a white stripe on the side
- Flash of iridescent green on the wing
Female (hen):
- Mostly brown and mottled
- Looks similar to a small female mallard but noticeably smaller and more compact.
Behavior
- Teal are fast, agile flyers and often fly in tight flocks that twist and turn together.
- They migrate long distances and may travel from northern Canada or Alaska down into the southern United States and Central America for winter.
